My favorite Christmas Plants

It's that time of year again! I'm so excited for my first year selling poinsettias. This plant holds a special place for me because this is where my first sparks to study horticulture began. Now that I know more about caring for this plant, I realize what an undertaking growing these plants were for my high school ag teacher. They cannot by neglected but the good thing is that the big, gorgeous red plants are hard to ignore.
This last March I went to Hawaii and in front of an art gallery in the charming town of Holualoa, I saw the plant in it's true form. For centuries in Mexican and Latin culture this weedlike woody shrub was revered for its medicinal and spiritual significance. The United States first U.S. ambassador to Mexico and botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett was captivated by the winter blooming plant and brought it back to his North Carolina plantation to cultivate. Professional growers have cultivated it to the traditional Christmas plant that it is today. Some tips for poinsettias: water consistently making sure they don't sit in trays of water. Don't put by cold drafts.

A second little bloomer that I have always adored is cyclamen. I have red and white cyclamen that add that little touch of color. They like cool 40-60 degree temperatures which makes them ideal for winter. Keep them away from cool drafts and fire places. Bright indirect light like a north or east window is ideal. They will also enjoy some misting from time to time.
As I'm finishing up writing, the truck with all my specialty greens, garlands, and other fun Christmas items is showing up. If you haven't subscribed yet, please do on my home page and look forward to some specials. Would love to see you all this winter at my little flower shop too!
