My Amaryllis is Done Blooming: Now What?

ree

I am getting a lot of questions this time of year, what do I do with my amaryllis now that it's done blooming?

Originating in South America, Amaryllis are an easy to grow winter flower that has been brightening our long winter months for years. Here are some tips to enjoy them year to year.

After the flower is done blooming, cut the stalk off at the bottom. Continue to water and let the leaves grow and treat it as a houseplant. Once it is warm enough to plant annuals outside, take them outside. The best spot is morning sun with afternoon shade. Keep watering consistently and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer.

In September before it freezes, bring the plant inside and put in a dark cool location. This simulates dormancy. A cool location at 55 degrees is ideal. This time takes 6-8 weeks. At the end of October pull the plant out and place in a sunny window and start watering. The plant should start to put out blooms in a few weeks. This time frame should put blooms for Christmas. If you don't see blooms for Christmas, I think that the Amaryllis makes a beautiful winter flower for the house. Mine just got done blooming and it brightened up my January.

What's new at the greenhouse? We are continuing to expand our houseplant inventory. I had many requests these past two months and am trying to constantly keep my inventory stocked. Please tell me anything that you are wanting, and I will do my best to find it! Our seeds are also on their way. I am using Lake Valley Seed out of Boulder Colorado. They have a great selection of organic and hard to find varieties. Stay tuned for a seed saving and sharing class.

Each week come see our new selection of cut flowers. We have an everchanging selection for bouquets that we offer for carryout or delivery.

Thank you for your support! Last year we were just pouring concrete for the footers of our building. Hard to believe how far we've come. Come on in to shop, soak up the sun, or just to say hi!
